Renewable
energy sources include solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydropower
(water). Any energy source that originates in nature is deemed to
be renewable. The hitch with renewable sources of energy found in
nature is not duration but is the amount of energy that can be generated
per unit of time.
Biomass is one of the renewable energy sources produced from plants
and non-fossilized materials derivative of plants. Wood, biofuels
such as ethanol and biodiesel, and municipal solid waste and biogas
are some other examples of biomass. According to the Energy Information
Administration, in 2004 in the U.S., biomass accounted for “47%
of renewable energy consumption, with about 50% of that used for heating,
40% for electrical power production, and the rest as transportation
fuel.”
Hydropower is electricity generated from flowing water. Rainfall amounts
directly impact the amount of hydropower available. In the U.S., the
federal government remains the largest producer of hydropower, mainly
because it has the money and wherewithal to build the large facilities
needed to capture and generate energy from water. Tides and currents
are the latest advancements being harnessed as renewable energy sources
in the hydropower category.
