Although the Sharp Corp. is best known for its sales in consumer electronics, the company also makes Sharp solar products. In fact, it is one of the biggest producers of photovoltaic cells. Photovoltaic cells are synonymous with solar cells.

Sharp expects to make much of its revenue in 2009 from electronics. Still, at the end of 2007 Sharp began construction in Japan on a huge complex that would manufacture Sharp solar cells. The factory is scheduled to start producing cells in 2010.

Although Sharp solar products have a large market share, Sharp still faces stiff competition. Some of its largest competitors in the solar field include BP Solar and First Solar. In the weakening economy it will be crucial for Sharp to use its market edge to devote funding for research and development that will make solar products less expensive.
