For battery systems, solar charge controllers
regulate the power going from the solar panels to the batteries. With a charge controller,
batteries will not overcharge, leading to optimal battery life and performance.
Most charge controllers use pulse width modulation (PWM) to slowly lower
the amount of power applied to the batteries as the batteries get closer and closer
to fully charged. This type of controller can keep
batteries in a fully charged state, or float, indefinitely. Some of our more popular
PWM charge controllers are the
Steca PR3030 charge controller
and the Xantrex C40 charge controller.
The most recent and best type of solar charge controller is called maximum power
point tracking or MPPT. MPPT controllers are able to convert excess voltage
into amperage. This allows the voltage to remain at an opmimal level to reduce charge time.
MPPT charge controllers result in lower power loss. One of our more popular MPPT solar charge controllers is the
BZ MPPT500 charge controller.
