Solar
energy has been primarily used to heat hot water and provide electricity
for homes and businesses. However, solar cooking is getting increased
attention. This is particularly true in places where there are few
resources for cooking.
Humanitarian organizations are trying to distribute solar cookers
in places where deforestation is an issue. In addition, solar cooking
is being promoted in deserts. Solar cooking is helpful because not
very much fuel is consumed and the risks of fire are small.
There are many designs for solar cook or is and hundreds of variations
on those designs. However, solar cookers are most effective if they
concentrate sunlight, convert light to heat and trap heat.
