Solar
roof shingles are part of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
This means that they are a photovoltaic (PV) technology which can
be incorporated into the design of a building. PV technology deals
with the conversion of light into electricity.
As their name hints, solar roof shingles fit onto a home much like
regular roof shingles. However, they also provide this PV ability
to convert sunlight into electricity. Of course, additional wires
are necessary to provide power to the home.
Solar roof shingles are created with impure silicon. As sunlight
hits these roof adornments, electrons are knocked loose, creating
DC power. This electrical current must be directed from the shingles
either into batteries for storage or changed into AC power through
an inverter. The AC power can then be used for home or business electrical
needs.
