During
the 2009 presidential campaign both candidates promised to turn their
attention toward sustainable energy. In part, this was due to the
de-stabilizing effect of dependency upon foreign oil. It was also
due to growing environmental concerns.
The 2009 recession has taken center stage and it will be hard to
convince the public that sustainable energy needs to remain a priority.
As Barack Obama has gathered his cabinet he has repeatedly made reference
to dealing with the economy, and the focus on alternative energy has
dropped into the background.
Using sustainable energy often requires an initial investment of
capital. Environmentalists fear that with so many major budgetary
issues confronting the government it will be hard to sustain public
interest in alternative energy practices. Many working-class homes
will likely be more focused on keeping food on the table than on reading
about sustainable energy practices.
